Albert Porter was killed with an axe at his home in Milton Street, Burnley.
His 24-year-old son-in-law, a process worker, was tried for his murder but acquitted.
The process worker was arrested after a prisoner in Belfast Prison told the police that Albert Porter's son-in-law had killed him. However, it was noted that at the trial, even the prosecution had misgivings over the case and the judge ordered the jury to return a not guilty verdict.
Albert Porter had previously been a Blackpool bus cleaner.
He was last seen when he left a working man's club late on the Sunday night. He was found battered to death at his home 24 hours later.
